The establishment of the Laboratory is inseparably connected with the examination of the properties of gallium and with finding of the fields of its application. Natural minerals of this element are very scarce and it concentrates mainly in some products of processing of alumina-containing raw materials. Even before the Great Patriotic War, in 1939, in the Laboratory of rear elements at the Chemical Institute of the Ural Branch of the USSR AS, Drs. V.G. Timoshev and B.E. Belenkova carried out much work under the leadership of Prof. Syrokomskii to develop a method for gallium extraction. In the early 1950’s, at the Institute of Chemistry and Metallurgy UB AS in the Laboratory of chemistry of rare-element compounds headed by Prof. A.K. Sharova, gallium was studied by N.I. Petunina who has elaborated a method for polarographic determination of gallium, as well as by S.P. Yatsenko (since 1954) who has worked out several technologies for gallium extraction. The scientific supervisor of the research was Prof. N.V. Demenyov, the Chairman of the Presidium of UB USSR AS. In 1964, the team studying the properties of compounds of gallium and other diffused rare elements received the official status of a group of diffused rare elements, which in 1967 was reorganized into the Laboratory of compounds of diffused rare elements. Since that time the Laboratory was headed by Prof. Sergey Pavlovich Yatsenko, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, the Vice-President of the Ural Branch of the Academy of Engineering, Doctor of Chemistry. Over this period, the foundations for obtaining substances and materials with pre-assigned characteristics have been developed theoretically and experimentally, their properties have been examined, and technological principles of concentration and refinement of elements have been worked out. On the basis of some models, theories have been developed and important properties of substances have been calculated. More than one hundred phase diagrams of systems and a large number of composition-property diagrams have been constructed or refined using experimental techniques. Several technologies for high-level chemical processing of technogeneous Urals deposits have been worked out on the basis of the fundamental studies. A number of developments relating to alloys, intermetallic compounds, technologies for processing of wastes, for extraction of gallium, scandium, yttrium, for production of protecting alloys, purification of metals, as well as for manufacture of materials for medical applications have been introduced or are being commercialized.

The main scientific area of focus of the Laboratory is physico-chemical substantiation of chemical processes of in-depth processing of technogeneous, metallurgical and other industrial wastes containing diffused rare and rare-earth elements, synthesis and investigation of properties of alloys and compounds of these elements with the purpose of searching for new promising fields of their application.
